The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay (MGAP) alerted this Monday about the loss of a container containing a chemical from “high toxicity” and called on the population to return it to the corresponding authorities in case it is found.

According to a statement released by the portfolio, this Sunday a rural producer from the department (province) of Soriano (southwest) reported the loss of the container containing aluminum phosphide which is used as an insecticide in agricultural production, one of the main economic activities of the South American country.

“This product is used as grain insecticide or fumigantHowever, it is warned that in contact with ambient humidity it can become highly toxic only if it is ingested or inhaled,” the document states.

Between the symptoms may include seizure, diarrhea, unconsciousness, vomiting, abdominal pain, burning sensation, cough, dizziness, headache, shortness of breath, nausea, sore throat, and headache.

However, the MGAP reported that the substance is in a sealed aluminum container “with all the corresponding security measures” so “if it is not handled incorrectly it does not represent a danger”.
