The Berlin headquarters of Germany’s ruling Social Democratic Party (GSDP) was spray-painted red with symbols in support of the Palestinian Hamas movement. The act was committed in the early hours of today, DPA reported.

The facade of the building, named Dom “Willy Brandt” and located in the center of the German capital, is painted with the words “national interest = genocide” and two upside-down triangles, a police spokesman said. The symbolism has been linked to supporters of the radical Palestinian organization Hamas, and law enforcement officials suspect a political motive behind the incident.

The written message refers to Germany’s long-standing policy of support for Israel.

Shortly after the unprecedented massacre by Hamas and other extremist groups that killed more than 1,200 people in southern Israel on October 7, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who represents the GSDP, told his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu in a telephone conversation that ” Israel’s security is part of Germany’s national interest.”

In an interview with the German-language Jewish weekly Judische Allgemeine, the General Secretary of the Social Democrats, Kevin Künert, commented on the case as follows: “Those who use Islamist symbols are not fighting for the protection and self-determination of the peaceful Palestinian population, but quite the opposite.”

Hamas is the cause of most of the problems in Gaza. Support (for Hamas) is tantamount to increasing suffering,” he added.

The police initially attributed the case to environmental activists, but this version was later rejected, and law enforcement officials said that the perpetrator remains unclear for now.

Although the GSDP-led center-left governing coalition, as well as the conservative opposition, follow a more pro-Israeli course in the current conflict in the Middle East, there were pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Berlin and other major urban centers in Germany that turned violent, writes BTA.

Scholz clearly and unequivocally declared his strong support for Israel, but also for the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, DPA points out.
