The work, titled “Ciro Ferreira, an ally of life”, is written by the journalist and writer Mauricio Cavallo. It explores the life of the prominent doctor from his childhood and adolescence to his time as a medical student. Furthermore, he delves into his connection with the cultural movement of Tacuarembó, known as “Grupo de Tacuarembó”, where he shared experiences with prominent figures such as Washington Benavídes, Eduardo Darnauchans and Eduardo Larbanois, among others.

The book also highlights Dr. Ciro Ferreira’s notable career as a surgeon and his role as director of the Tacuarembó Hospital for a period of almost 32 years. The presentation of the book constitutes an opportunity to learn in detail about the life and contributions of a prominent health professional in Uruguay.

Through more than 25 interviews with family members, patients, colleagues, friends, colleagues and communicators, the author takes an exciting tour through the twists and turns of a life full of stories and anecdotes of the surgeon from Tacuarembo.

The prologue of the book was written by the doctor Antonio Turnes, who highlights that Ferreira was trained as a surgeon in the clinic of the remembered academic and professor Dr. Luis A. Praderi. There, he received guidance from his mentor, Professor Emeritus Dr. Roberto Perdomo. “Both, with their humanity, expertise and quality in transmitting life lessons, contributed to perfecting a young doctor who, due to genetics, had the commitment to fight to improve the health conditions of his people.”

The work is structured in four chapters. In the first, titled “A long and winding road,” the author addresses Ciro’s childhood and adolescence. They explore his studies at the Jesuit congregation’s San Javier College, where he learned to cultivate spirituality and marveled at the life and work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. In addition, his transfer to Montevideo to begin his studies in Medicine is described.

A cutting-edge hospital in Tacuarembó

The second chapter, titled “Management,” addresses the more than 30 years of Dr. Ciro Ferreira at the head of the Tacuarembó Hospital. This hospital is recognized as a reference center both nationally and internationally, standing out for its technological advances, such as its modern operating rooms and delivery rooms, the Neurosurgery Center, the Oncology Center, the breast milk bank and, most recently, a drone system for the transport of human milk, blood and drugs. This system quickly and safely connects the hospital with the polyclinics in rural areas.

In the third chapter, Cavallo delves into the importance of family as Ferreira’s support and legacy as a medical professional. The book concludes with the chapter entitled “Crossing paths and a shared history”, where several professors recall their different moments with Ciro Ferreira, among them Dr. Henry Cohen, professor emeritus of the Faculty of Medicine, and the professor of surgery Óscar Balboa, currently retired.
