With the implementation of Law 2232 of 2022, which progressively bans single-use plastics since July 7, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is encouraging the use of packaging made from fique fiber.
This initiative not only represents an environmental solution, but also supports approximately 70 thousand Colombian producers and their families.
Fique, a biodegradable and compostable fiber, plays a crucial role in reducing plastic waste when used in the manufacture of bags. reusable market straw, cabuya, sacks and other packaging for perishable and non-perishable products. In addition, fique plants contribute to carbon sequestration, supporting the Government of Change’s efforts to mitigate climate change.
The use of fique also reduces dependence on plastics and petrochemical products.Its by-products, such as juice and bagasse, can be used to produce biogas, compost and organic fertilizers, among other uses.

Colombia currently produces 17,370 tons of fique, with a notable participation of indigenous communities in its production and transformation.Women play a fundamental role in the production chain, making handicrafts such as backpacks, household items, placemats, rugs and furniture.
Promoting the use of fique not only benefits the environment, but also promotes the sustainable development of the country’s agricultural and artisanal communities, encouraging more ecological and sustainable practices.
The promotion of fique as an alternative to single-use plastics represents an opportunity to improve environmental quality and the living conditions of thousands of rural families in Colombia.
