Specific rings and chains will help the relatives of the two men, who were missing after the explosions at the fireworks warehouse near Elin Pelin, to identify them. Their bodies were found on Sunday. It was then deemed safe for investigators to conduct an initial inspection of the pyrotechnics storage base.
Fireworks at the five warehouses exploded on Thursday at around 6pm, with booms being heard well into the night of Sunday.
Both bodies were so burnt,
that the medical examiner who participated in the examination was only able to confirm that one belonged to a man. The other was wedged under a concrete element in the warehouse. “Both were in the vicinity of the company’s service room”, explained the district prosecutor of Sofia Natalia Nikolova.
Both bodies have been assigned DNA and forensic examination. Despite the problem that exists in the overcrowded morgue of Aleksandrovska Hospital, it is there that the tests will be done. A few days ago it became clear that the medical facility indicated that they were storing 150 bodies at a capacity of 75. This was reported by the chief prosecutor Borislav Sarafov.
Because of the problem, the state prosecution asked the hospital, which undertook to do the examinations.
Although the bodies were badly burned, there was enough DNA material on them to be extracted. It is believed that the two dead are Teodor Popov – son of the head of the warehouses Todor Popov, and the 60-year-old employee of the company Stoyan.
Kristina Shishkova, the 20-year-old daughter of Associate Professor Petar Shishkov, also died on the night before Saturday in “Pirogov”. He could not fight for his life and died on Friday night. Their autopsies will be done in “Pirogov”.
In addition to the security guard, it turned out that there was also another witness at the scene. A young boy who was probably a student of Prof. Shishkov. On Sunday morning, Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov first announced that he hitchhiked without giving a signal and was later searched and questioned. In the early afternoon, however, Stoyanov pointed out that the boy actually called the emergency number 112. Then the hotline employees told him that they were already aware.

he was present for 20 minutes at what was happening inside, the minister explained. “I personally spoke with the boy when we brought him to us, extremely intelligent, in my opinion also competent in the field”, he gave details. The young man explained that first an explosion was heard, and then the fire started. He survived because he hid in a bus, which then caught fire. Then he managed to go under the fence and escape.
A total of 8 witnesses were questioned in the case, which is being conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Sofia and the National Investigation Service.
“We work on all versions – from human negligence, damage to any of the products, technical malfunction and accidental act. We will also check the version of an intentionally caused act,” Nikolova said. The head of the investigation, Ivelina Hristova, clarified that they are aware of the circumstances that led to the explosion. For now, however, he refused to go into specifics. “We still have a lot of work to do – who, why, for what reasons was in the warehouse, what is the quantity of pyrotechnic products and others”, Hristova pointed out.
The investigation would even cover the building permit for the warehouse. He has been working since 2012. It will be checked whether it was built in accordance with the Territorial Development Act, more witnesses will be questioned.
On Monday, the firemen who pulled out Prof. Shishkov and his daughter in the first minutes will testify.

However, the site inspection will take at least a week. By Sunday afternoon, the rumblings continued. They are probably in a closed room – a container, because they are more deaf, the minister assumed.
Heavy machinery is being used to build a clearing through the sunflower fields so that the fire engines can get as close as possible and watering can begin from a safe distance.

We both managed to fulfill this childhood dream of ours last night.

In 2019, her father took her to the 17th International Fireworks Symposium in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Petar Shishkov has been making light shows for years. More than 10 years ago, he launched fireworks from the roofs of 7 buildings in Sofia on the occasion of the anniversary of a health fund. To this day, this show is unsurpassed in its scale.
“It’s time to rekindle the spark of love for pyrotechnic art! It’s time to restore the public’s faith that ZARYA IS GOOD!!!”, Shishkov wrote at the beginning of this year on his Facebook profile. Ironically, it was his favorite fireworks that killed him.
