Since the arrival of Javier Milei to the Presidency of Argentinathat country registers 5.5 million people in greater poverty.
The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) of Argentina reported that with Javier Milei in the Presidency, 5.5 million people have fallen into poverty, a situation that mainly affects children with a 66% of minors.
This official figure on poverty in Argentina is the first released since the president took power last December.

More than half of Argentina’s population lives in poverty with Javier Milei
According to the latest figures from Indec, the poverty in Argentina During the first semester of Javier Milei, from January to June, 2024 it rose to 52.9% of the total population.
While people experiencing homelessness rose to 18.1%.
The agency explained that poverty rose 11.2 points compared to that registered during the second half of 2023, when it reached 41.7% of Argentines.
Meanwhile, compared to the first half of 2023, the increase was 12.8 percent.
The 52.9 percent of the population in poverty in the first semester of Milei is the highest level reached since the first semester of 2003, when 54% of Argentinians were reported to be poor.
What is the reason for the increase in Argentines in poverty?
The increase in population of Argentina in a situation of poverty has been driven by factors such as:
- local currency devaluation and inflation
- decrease in purchasing power
- elimination of social programs
- job loss
It should be noted that Indec calculates poverty based on the comparison of income with the price of a total basic basket which integrates food, goods and services with an estimated value to date of 240 dollars.
