A young man who pleaded guilty to causing a fire in the building of the former “Cosmos” cinema in Plovdiv received a public reprimand. The decision of the District Court is final.

The fire broke out on January 22, 2021 at around 5:30 p.m. Eight firefighters were dispatched to the scene and tackled the flames before the damage became too extensive. Two doors, a suspended ceiling and a window were destroyed, and 50 square meters of walls were smoked.

In addition to the firefighters, policemen and representatives of the city administration arrived at the “Cosmos” cinema. They found that a group of youths broke down the door and started the fire by setting garbage inside on fire. The perpetrator, who pleaded guilty more than 3 years later, was then 14 years old.

The young man has entered into an agreement with the prosecutor’s office, by which he is released from criminal liability and must only endure public censure. He is also responsible for the expenses incurred in the course of the case in the amount of BGN 2380.99.
