Greek rescuers found 10 migrants on a rocky part of the Aegean island of Samos last night, after one person was found dead and 25 people were rescued after their boat sank yesterday, the Greek coastguard said today, as quoted by Reuters.
A search and rescue operation was underway and authorities were investigating the incident, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
In a separate incident, the coast guard found a speedboat with migrants leaving the Greek island of Chios on Saturday. Greek authorities found 20 migrants, including two children, who arrived on Chios, BTA writes.
The islands of Samos and Chios are located in the eastern Aegean Sea, close to the Turkish coast. Greece has been a preferred gateway to the European Union for migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia since 2015, when almost 1 million people arrived on its islands, mainly from Turkey.
The numbers dropped significantly before rising again last year to 41,561 sea arrivals. Some 10,854 migrants have reached Greece by sea this year.
