Gornooryakhiv medics saved the life of a 34-year-old woman from Veliko Tarnov, who spent three days in suffering, returned from several medical institutions. The team, led by gastroenterologist Dr. Ilko Kosturkov, performed an accurate diagnosis and a life-saving endoscopic procedure, which ended the case successfully, the press center of the municipal hospital reported.

On February 16, the woman bought jellied tongue from a store in Veliko Tarnovo and had dinner with it. Immediately after consumption, she felt unpleasant irritation and stinging in the upper part of the esophagus, as well as difficulty in swallowing. “I decided that I had swallowed something, I had the feeling of a foreign body stuck in my esophagus. I went to the Emergency Department in Veliko Tarnovo, where they decided that I was an ENT specialist and started calling the hospital departments in Gabrovo, Gorna Oryahovitsa. During the night, I moved to UMBAL-Pleven, where in the emergency room they told me to stay in the city and wait for a specialist. I refused, and in the meantime I could feel that this foreign body was moving even lower,” says the patient.

For the second time, she went to the hospital in Tarnovo, but from there they told her that the case was for Pleven, that I should go there. “However, an acquaintance of mine recommended me the gastroenterologist Dr. Ilko Kosturkov in Gorna Oryahovitsa. He finally found this foreign body. They put an anesthetic on me and in two minutes they took it out – it was at least 4-5 centimeters, like a needle, with two sharp tips , in my opinion – metallic…”, the woman continues.

The head of the First Internal Department, Dr. Ilko Kosturkov, performed a gastroscopy and found the foreign body in the upper part of the esophagus. As a result of a complex endoscopic procedure, it was removed. The patient remained in the medical facility for two days under observation and was discharged in good condition.

“The doctor told me that the foreign body was standing transversely, which was very dangerous, as it could have led to tears and also that its removal was quite risky,” B.V. also tells.

The woman is now fine and thanks the team of specialists.

Last month, Dr. Kosturkov saved a man from Lyaskovets who had swallowed a BGN 2 coin along with a piece of New Year’s pie.
