Shipping on the Kilia branch of the Danube River in eastern Romania resumed under normal conditions this afternoon after being hampered for about seven hours by the discovery of a World War II French sea mine, Agerpress reported.
“The area is currently safe for river navigation,” the Danube Delta Emergency Situations Inspectorate said.
The sea mine was spotted near the village of Patlajanka around 9.00 am. Military divers were dispatched to the site and found the object to be the hull of a historic World War II French-made mine without an explosive charge, Romania’s naval headquarters said.
After the intervention of the divers, the mine’s casing was removed from the Kilia inlet in order to remove any danger to shipping, it was noted in a statement from the headquarters, writes BTA.
All boats and ships passing through the Killia Strait were instructed earlier today to slow down and follow the instructions of the authorities after an object resembling a sea mine was spotted in the area.
