This Tuesday, the formalization of the 18 people arrested for the robbery of the securities firm, which was allegedly carried out by around 30 people, is underway.
In the Rancagua Guarantee Court, the investigation has been taking place since this morning formalization of the 18 detainees for his alleged involvement in the millionaire robbery to the securities safekeeping company Brinkswhich shocked the city during the afternoon of Friday, August 16.
In this context, the regional prosecutor of O’Higgins, Achilles Cubillospresented the background of the case, stating that the criminal organization that carried out the robbery operated under a “hierarchical and permanent structure over time“and that its members held various meetings to plan every detail of the crime in question.
In addition, the prosecutor answered one of the questions that has been most repeated in recent days: he revealed the amount stolen by the gang from the company, which he estimated at $12 billion.
However, the whereabouts of the money have not yet been found, and the police are still searching for it. With this information, it is ruled out as the biggest robbery in the history of Chile, since it was below the so-called “Robbery of the Century”, when a criminal group assaulted a securities company in the commune of Independencia in 2017. On that occasion, the criminals escaped with a sum of $16 billion.
Details of the formalization of the 18 detainees for the robbery at Brinks in Rancagua
Before proceeding with the assault on the Brinks branch in Rancagua, the criminal organization burned various vehicles in different parts of the regional capital, with the aim of creating a distraction and facilitating the escape with the money.
Regarding the above, the Public Prosecutor’s Office detailed that 21 vehicles were involved and seven of them were burned.
According to the investigations, between 25 and 30 people would have intervened in different roles to carry out the illegal action. In detail, the defendants are accused of the crimes of criminal association, robbery with intimidation, seven crimes of arson, possession of incendiary elements, illegal possession of a prohibited weapon and 19 crimes of receiving stolen motor vehicles.
Among those charged, two of them had to appear from the hospital, as they were injured in the confrontation with Carabineros following an operation to arrest those responsible for the robbery.
Seized weapon was used in attack on Izkia Siches
On the other hand, it was also revealed in the instance that one of the weapons that was used in the assault on Brinks was also used in the attack on the convoy of the former Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, when he visited the Araucanía Region in March 2022.
Along these lines, the chief prosecutor of Criminal Analysis O’Higgins, Carlos Fuentes, assured that the arrest of one of the accused was carried out, a Glock brand firearm.
“Information is being consulted about this Glock model 17 pistol, which has its serial number erased (…),” the prosecutor explained. He added: “This same weapon appears to have been involved in events in Collipulli, on July 1, 2021, where that weapon appears to have been fired.”
He also said that the weapon was also involved in a “complex attack” on March 15, 2022 in Collipulli.
“It appears to have been fired and used in an attack in that area. What is the point here? That this attack is not just any attack, but it was the almost an attack on the Minister of the Interior at the time, Izkia Siches, in the community of Temucuicui, where unknown individuals fired shots into the public highway,” the prosecutor stated.
