They seize 3 weapons and Q40 thousand in cash in raids on the home of former prosecutor Juan Francisco Sandoval

Authorities of the Public Ministry reported that several raids were carried out on homes located in zone 5, Mixco and San Miguel Petapa as a follow-up to the case called Criminal Prosecution Phase I, which refers to alleged illegal acts to harm the magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice, Blanca Stalling.

In this case, it was sought to specify the arrest of the ex-prosecutor Juan Francisco Sandoval, Eva Xiomara Sosa and Claudia González Orellana, who was arrested. Both former workers of the MP and of the extinct International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG).

According to the authorities, in the house located in San Miguel Petapa, owned by the Sandoval family, three firearms and Q40 thousand were found, without being able to justify their origin.

“They are seized because they are findings within the raid. Then an expert opinion is made to rule out that they have a link to a criminal act, if so they are returned,” MP sources detailed.

About the case

The investigation, carried out by the Internal Affairs Prosecutor’s Office, revealed that Sandoval, Sosa and Orellana committed the crime of abuse of authority, since “abusing their positions they carried out illegal acts to the detriment of the public administration and another public official, specifies mind of Justice Blanca Stalling”.

“It was determined that within the documentation presented on January 11, 2017, to motivate the preliminary hearing promoted against the magistrate (…) Documents are produced, which reveal the completion of investigative procedures initiated before the complaint was filed and before the withdrawal of the pretrial proceedings,” detailed through a press release.

They point out that they used reports made by Cicig personnel, without the proper authorization of a competent judge. They also ensure that the Cicig carried out an illegal intervention “since, despite the fact that on February 2, 2017, it requested to open an investigation, in charge of the Feci, it intervened from the beginning of the irregular investigation, since the complaint was even taken in its seat”.
