The Social Security Health (EsSalud) warned about the increase in fungal infections in the fingers and toenails due to the increase in temperature and humidity with the arrival of summer.

Gabriela Pajuelo Carrasco, dermatologist at the Grau Emergency Hospital, explained that these factors create an environment conducive to the proliferation of fungi, which is why she recommended being alert before the appearance of symptoms.

The specialist explained that fungal nail infections can be recognized as:

  • Color changes: Nails lose their natural transparency and acquire white, yellow or green tones.
  • Turing: They become thicker, hardened and difficult to cut.
  • Deformities: irregularities or visible changes in the structure of the nail.

To confirm the diagnosis, Dr. Pajuelo perform specific tests such as scrapings or cultures for fungi.

He added that various situations could increase the risk of fungal infections, including: not drying the feet properly, especially between the toes, sharing footwear or personal care tools, taking contaminated showers or swimming pools use, and maintain close and prolonged contact with infected people. .

WHY TAKE PREVENTIVE MEASURES?

In addition, the dermatologist emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures, especially during the summer because; proper drying (use a specific towel or paper towel, paying special attention between the toes), use of sandals (protect the feet in public places such as swimming pools and showers) and regular hygiene (clean and disinfect the feet and nails often).

Dr. Pajuelo encouraged the population not to ignore the symptoms and seek timely medical attention.

“Depending on the severity of the case, the treatment can be topical or systemic (oral), but should always be supervised by a dermatologist to ensure its effectiveness and avoid complications,” he finished.
