The Government of Mexico City will carry out releveling works in the elevated area of Pantitlán on Line 9 of the Collective Transportation System (STC) Metroafter the sinking problems that have been reported at the whereabouts.

The general director, Guillermo Calderón, informed that these works have not yet been tendered and that they are not urgent, since the current structure of the pillars and bridges are safe for users. He pointed out that the works will begin until after the reopening of the first phase on Line 1.

The closures are projected from the Velódromo to Pantitlán stations. However, this will also be determined once the final project is chosen, as the Metro is currently still evaluating the best option.

The head of the Metro assured that the reinforcement works that were carried out are preventive, so that the structure and operation of the line is completely safe.

Meanwhile, Renato Berrón, head of the Institute for Construction Safety, assured that Pantitlán will be permanently monitored through subsidence studies to guarantee the useful life and proper functioning of the system.

He explained that Pantitlán currently has a subsidence of around 80 centimeters, since it was built 36 years ago, in addition to the fact that it sinks 10 centimeters annually.

“In the future we will continue to monitor closely and carry out inspections along the entire line to understand the behavior of this structure and how it is moving; The solution that is being proposed is precisely to be able to absorb the settlement problems for about 15 years,” Berrón commented.

According to the Latinus portal, the Metro has had an executive project since 2022 that cost 40 million pesos and was prepared by the company Construcciones ICI, which recommends a complete rehabilitation of the elevated section. But this has not been tendered.

At a press conference, the Metro director acknowledged that this executive project is only one of the options being considered and that there is at least one other alternative, although both will have to be based on the plan to level the ground.

Darío Solano, a researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the UNAM, explained that the decision to carry out these rehabilitation works must come hand in hand with a series of structural studies and the quality of the material, which could take around 5 months. more, due to specialization.

“This type of evaluation requires a very spatial analysis that is done almost structure by structure. When Line 12 was evaluated, the studies were published in stages to provide preliminary data from the first month. So this case should be the same,” Solano said.

Meanwhile, urban planner Roberto Remes assured that beyond the structural safety of the bridges in Pantitlán, the closures will affect the operation of the system, as well as the mobilization capacity, since the area will continue to be diminished by the works on Line 1 .

“What is most compromised is the operation of the system; because when they reopen the section from Salto del Agua to Pantitlán they will have to close from Balderas to Observatorio. So, the Metro will be incomplete in the western and eastern areas of the City”, he commented.
