DSA/TECH – This Friday, August 25, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, announces the entry into force of the regulation on digital services (Digital Services ActDSA) to combat “illegal content”. He explains that he has powers of investigation and sanction in order to enforce this objective.

On his own X-Twitter social network, Elon Musk replies that he and his teams “work hard” to comply with this new European commitment.

The DSA comes into full effect on February 17, 2024, but very large online platforms and large search engines are affected earlier.

“It is really time for Europe to set its own rules”

In a video published in English on his twitter account, Thierry Breton announces that the DSA becomes legally applicable today for very large online platforms. “It is really time for Europe to set its own rules”he explains before adding: “but at the same time it is necessary to protect freedom of expression against arbitrary decisions”.

“To protect our citizens and our democracies from illegal content”he assures that his services and himself will be “very rigorous in verifying that systemic platforms comply with the DSA” and that they now have the power to investigate and sanction.

Elon Musk replied: “We are working hard on that.”

X-Twitter has also recently implemented the “Community Notes” feature to fight misinformation. Community Notes participants can write a note to provide additional context to a tweet deemed to be misleading. This “open source” program is accessible to users who request it.
