jpnn.comJAKARTA – Snapchat is currently experimenting with placing sponsored messages next to chat threads from friends.

Sponsored Snaps from brands will appear as unread messages in Snapchat’s main Chat tab.

According to CEO Evan Spiegel, that means they’ll sit on top of messages from someone’s contacts until they’re opened.

For the first time, Snap is showing ads in the most-used part of its app.

In a memo to employees also posted on the company’s website, Spiegel said that Sponsored Snaps will appear without a push notification, and opening the message will be optional.

It’s unclear how easy it is to delete a Sponsored Snap without opening it, or if it’s even possible.

“Sponsored Snaps empower advertisers to communicate visually with the Snapchat community, making Snapchat’s core functionality accessible to advertisers. As always, your conversations with friends remain private and are not used for advertising purposes,” Spiegel wrote.

To understand why Snap is doing this now, just look at its stock price, which is near an all-time low.
