Among Spanish retirees, it was customary to await with interest the arrival of the month of January for the so-called “paguilla” that they used to receive from the State, something that will not happen in 2024. That extra money, which they no longer received last January or January 2022, is something that many still miss but Its disappearance has a more than justified reason.

Until 2022, retirees’ pensions were revalued according to CPI estimates carried out by the Government at the beginning of the year. Since these forecasts were often not completely accurate, the “paguilla”, which was collected the following January, became the leveler that counteracted the difference between what prices had actually increased and the estimate made by the Executive.

To avoid these deviations that, at least for a few months, undermined the purchasing power of retirees, the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá proposed a corrective change so that pensions were adjusted each year to the real CPItaking as a reference to raise them the price variation registered each November with respect to the same month of the previous year.

By applying pension revaluations according to objective and real data, the “paguilla” was no longer necessary. Those pensioners who still miss it must be reminded that They are already receiving compensation month after month for the annual inflation recorded.
