“Having achieved the favorable vote of the absolute majority of the members of the chamber, I declare that the confidence of the Congress of Deputies has been granted to Mr. Pedro Sánchez Castejón.” With these words, the president of Congress, Francina Armengol, announced the result of the vote at the socialist’s investiture, after which Sánchez becomes president of the Government for the next legislature. As expected, Sánchez has received the support of the 179 deputies who committed to facilitating a new socialist coalition government, while no abstentions have been recorded. By formation, these were the results of the vote:

Of the seven parties that have voted in favor of Sánchez’s investiture (in addition to the PSOE), all except the Canary Coalition have also supported the proposed amnesty law, which exonerates those convicted of the independence process during the last decade – it affects some 400 people, including 73 police officers. It is precisely against this proposal that different sectors of the right and extreme right have been demonstrating in the last two weeks in the vicinity of the PSOE headquarters in Madrid, on Ferraz Street. On the eve of the investiture vote alone, a total of 15 people were arrested.
