INVESTIGATION – Everything seems to show that the “new ecstasy” of students is on the rise among a section of British youth. Very popular on the party scene, this substance worries the authorities.

On the surface, it was a birthday meal like any other. A balloon hanging from a chair bore the inscription “21 years today” and the guests’ glasses were ready to clink together to celebrate this symbolic transition to adulthood. On this spring day in 2023, however, a place remained empty at the restaurant table. That of the young girl who was to be celebrated. Jeni Larmour should have been twenty-one that day, had she not been carried away by a drug that thrives on British campuses, ketamine. Three years after his death, his mother, Sandra, wanted to organize this family anniversary. And the balloon went to adorn his grave littered with flowers left by friends.

Originally from Newtownhamilton, a modest village in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Jeni Larmour was eighteen years old when she proudly entered Newcastle University on October 3, 2020. The one who wants “change the world» chose to study architecture and urban planning there. This brilliant young girl will only be a student for a few hours. The very evening of her arrival in Newcastle, Jeni collapses in her room and dies from the combined effects of drugs and alcohol. If she hadn’t been turned away from a downtown bar because she didn’t have ID and if she hadn’t returned to her apartment alone, she might still be alive , Sandra can’t help but think.
