This unique, strong and beautiful sustainable house made of clay by CSV is built on the culture and scientific technology of the villages of India.
It is believed that architecture is the mother of all arts. It is an art in which we get to see the lifestyle, technology and practices of any society. However, with time, there have been many changes in this as well, due to which such houses are now being built which are not in accordance with nature. In view of all these problems, the Center of Science for Villages has made a unique initiative, the purpose of which is to do construction work according to nature.
Started in 1976 in Wardha city of Maharashtra, the center aims to promote sustainability through manufacturing as well as many other means. They are working to provide employment to the people of the village and advance them by mixing the traditional methods and culture of India with today’s scientific and modern techniques. In this series, CSV has made such a mud house with the unique ‘vault roof technology’, in which the soil left over from the old houses has been used and its roof is made of kulhad.
The kulhad in which we usually drink tea and water; The same kulhads made of clay have been joined together to give the shape of an arch and from these the strong roof of the CSV home has been made. Pieces of broken Chinese tiles are also placed beneath it, which makes the roof waterproof and prevents excessive sunlight from entering. And thus the house remains cool from inside.
In this way, things like cement, metal and steel are not required to make the roof. This technology is best suited for disaster prone areas like floods and earthquakes as it does not take much time to build a house, is fast to build, comfortable to live in and low cost.
This house is close to village culture
Sameer Kurvene, who works for the center, invented this method of building a house a long time ago from his research. Sameer is no more in this world today but the center is taking his work forward. Actually, CSVs work to promote the culture and technology of the village. Apart from this, he is also providing employment to more and more people of the village.
The talented potters who work here have made kulhads for the CSV house, which have been used to make the vaulted roof of the house. Apart from this, the walls and floors here are also made from only mud bricks and local materials, making this house completely eco-friendly. Due to these natural materials used in construction, this CSV house of Kulhar remains cool from inside in summers and warm in winters.
