National leader in transplants

In this case we refer to the Specialty Hospital “Dr. Antonio Fraga Mouret”, of the La Raza National Medical Center. It was founded on April 20, 1979 and stands out for the service it offers to 8 million beneficiaries. In fact, this High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) is among the first five places nationwide in number of kidney transplants.

In this sense, the general director of the IMSS, Zoé Robledo, highlighted that the UMAE is a pioneer in the pancreas, heart and kidney transplant. He added that he also performed the first autotransplant of the adrenal gland in Latin America for the treatment of Parkinson’s.

He pointed out that the Hospital de Especialidades is considered the most important bone marrow transplant center for the treatment of hematological diseases. He is also a precursor in Mexico and Latin America in microsurgical techniques for reimplantation of amputated limbs: hand, arm and fingers, and mammary gland reconstruction.

Activities in an everyday day

He stressed that the hospital is at the forefront in head, neck, vascular and bile duct reconstruction surgery. On a typical day, it grants 900 consultations, 32 surgeries, 60 Continuing Admission services, 16 Hemodynamic studies, 8 pacemaker implants are placed, and 6,789 laboratory studies are provided.

In this sense, Dr. María del Rosario Canseco Raymundo, head of the Department of Allergy and Immunology of the Hospital de Especialidades de La Raza, explained that the immune system defends the body against harmful or foreign substances called antigens, which can be germs such as bacteria. or viruses, chemical substances or toxins, cells damaged by cancer, among others.

Primary immunodeficiency care

The Social Security specialist said that when an immunodeficiency occurs, this system weakens and allows infections and other diseases to develop more easily.

He added that when it suffers from a deficiency in its function, it generates conditions known as primary immunodeficiencies (PI), which can be inherited or generated by mutations. PIs cause girls, boys and adults to have frequent infections or make them difficult to cure.

Dr. María del Rosario Canseco Raymundo said that some of the warning signs of primary immunodeficiency are: presenting two or more ear and paranasal sinus infections in less than a year, pneumonia every year in a row, chronic diarrhea with loss of weight, recurrent viral infections, continuous skin abscesses, persistent thrush, family history, among others.

For his part, Dr. José Arturo Velázquez García, director of the Hospital de Especialidades, said that since June 2003 it has been called UMAE with three complementary units: Central Blood Bank, Morelos Psychiatry Hospital and in September 2022 the External Consultation Unit.

It is the reference hospital for units of the OOAD North of CDMX, the State of Mexico East, West and Hidalgo as well as a part of the Yucatan peninsula; for adult care in 50 medical and surgical specialties.

He added that this hospital is recognized for handling the The most successful Liver Transplant Program of the Mexican Social Security Institute with 20 procedures performed in 2022 and a 90 percent survival.
