Those gathered watched in shock the images of two periods: what Kyiv, Mariupol, and other cities looked like before and after February 24, 2022, when Russia launched a terrible invasion of Ukraine.

Broken destinies, destroyed homes, the surrounding pain – such a trace of the “Russian world”, which until now ravages and torments the attacked country, still poses a huge threat not only to Ukraine, but also to the entire planet.

Therefore, the participants of the kindness campaign have been paying great attention to helping Ukraine for the third year – from October 2023 to January 2024, more than 1,000 trench candles were made, 100 kg of threads were collected, camouflage nets were woven, 250 pairs of socks were knitted, 350 kg of food products were donated, 400 units canned meat, sleeping bags, blankets, bedding, warm clothes, first aid kits, puzzles for Ukrainian children were also provided.

Components for the production of candles were also collected: 300 kilograms of paraffin, 15 kilograms of cardboard, 1000 cans, from which another large batch of candles was made by the volunteers of the charity and support fund “United Kindness”.

Representatives of this fund made sure that all the tools were delivered to Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.

At the end of 2022 – the beginning of 2023, the children of Pakaunia region made 3,000 trench candles for the soldiers of Ukraine and civilians without electricity.

More and more participants are getting involved

Starting from the fall of 2023, the largest number of educational institutions in the Kaunas district during the whole decade are participating in the campaign “Open our hearts” – all 27 schools and 3 kindergartens.

From March to May, the participants of the campaign “Open our hearts” extend a helping hand to the elderly living in care institutions in the Kaunas district – they decorate their rooms for Easter, visit them with concert programs, clean the environment, give self-made postcards, baked cakes, other treats, play board games , participates in joint health promotion events.

Aid to Ukraine is being expanded

At the event held on Friday, Kaunas District Vice Mayor Raminta Popovienė, Kaunas District Municipality Culture, Education and Sports Department Head Jonas Petkevičius, Kaunas District Council member, teacher Rasa Kazakevičienė, Head of Charity and Support Fund “Susivienije Gerumui” Agnė Jociuvienė thanked the students for their sacrifice and meaningful activities.

“This year, we decided to expand the aid to Ukraine, which is fighting against extremely fierce aggression – together with the students, we considered how we could contribute to make it easier for soldiers and civilians to survive the winter.

Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom, but also for ours, for the freedom of the whole of Europe”, said Miglė Trainienė, the initiator and organizer of the campaign “Open our hearts”, the chief specialist of the Culture, Education and Sports Department of the Kaunas District Municipality Administration.

The choirs “Abėcėlė” and “Muzika” of the Garliava Jonučiai pro-gymnasium, the street dance studio “Silver dance” of this educational institution and the reader Benas Aleksa, the ensemble “Drevinukas” of the Academy school-kindergarten “Gilė” and students of the Kaunas district art school performed on the stage of the thanksgiving event.

The event ended with one of the most beautiful patriotic works, the song “Let’s sing Lithuania” by Aistė Smilgevičiūtė and the group “Skylė”, which was performed by all the participants of the kindness campaign.

The basket of good works is getting bigger and bigger

The Kaunas district schoolchildren’s action “Open our hearts” has been taking place since 2014. It is organized by the Culture, Education and Sports Department of the Kaunas district municipal administration and the Kaunas district students’ council.

In the past 10 years, students have done a lot of good work: volunteering in Kaunas district orphanages, children’s day care centers, animal shelters, libraries, taking care of the graves and monuments of partisans and freedom fighters, providing assistance to migrant families.

In cooperation with the Kaunas district social service center, lonely people requesting social assistance were also visited in Kaunas district wards, their environment was taken care of, and assistance was provided to families with many children and families in distress.

Students organized cultural and entertainment events, health promotion, culinary, drawing, art and music therapy classes.

Community charity events were organized in schools in order to allocate the collected funds to the organization of children’s employment, to support single people, large families and families in distress, nursing hospitals, animal care and nursing homes for the elderly.
