IBM’s decision to install a quantum supercomputer in Donostia at the end of 2024 has been welcomed as “great news” at the institutional level. This was stated this Saturday in San Sebastián by Lehendakari Urkullu and Mayor Eneko Goia, who celebrated that the arrival of this technology will turn both “the Basque Country and Donostia into benchmarks”.
Urkullu, who has participated in Donostia in the presentation of the PNV candidacies for the elections on May 28, has stated that the location in the capital of San Sebastián of the sixth quantum supercomputer of the multinational «is great news both at an educational level as well as for research and technology.
IBM’s commitment will position Donostia as a benchmark in southern Europe in this groundbreaking technology. The machine will arrive through an Ikerbasque tender for the use of quantum technology for an amount of 44 million.
In this sense, the mayor of San Sebastián has considered that the landing of the global giant IBM is part of the «great capacity of the city in recent years to attract projects. Viralgen and Bayer are a good example. Now IBM has also chosen Donostia, it must be for a reason».
