A group of Spanish researchers has released the results of an observational study detailing the onset of symptoms of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using generation technology based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), in order to shorten diagnosis and treatment times. .

The study has been published by the magazine “Scientific Reports” and shows that Artificial Intelligence can help ALS patients and has been carried out by a research group in collaboration with the Francisco Luzón Foundation.

EHRead NLP technology has been used

Medical and research staff from the Hospital Universitario de Albacete and the Savana group from Madrid aimed to use medical reports from patients to describe the clinical profile and onset times between symptoms, diagnosis and consequences of the development of ALS.

These experts have used EHRead NLP technology and, thanks to Artificial Intelligence, it is capable of extrapolating variables through natural language processing. With this database, it is possible to analyze, in greater detail, the unstructured clinical information in electronic medical records and reduce the time it takes to diagnose the disease.

Defining how fast ALS progresses is crucial

What is clear is that defining how quickly ALS progresses is crucial to be able to provide patients with adequate care, delay disease progression as much as possible, and create a framework for evaluating the efficacy of treatment in the design of clinical trials.

In the case of ALS patients, they often present with non-specific initial symptoms that can be confused with other neuromuscular diseases. As the researchers have determined, “since misdiagnosis is common in earlier stages and advanced disease progression is necessary for clinical diagnosis, the median time to diagnosis is estimated to be between 9 and 24 months.”
