Many times intuition leads some to think whether the bill they have just received is counterfeit or not. Well, thanks to technology this can no longer be a headache.

There are several mobile applications on the market, both in the Play Store and the App Store, that can help you avoid falling into a financial scam and taking a counterfeit bill. These platforms have the option of identifying the veracity of each bill only using the device’s camera.

One of the alternatives is called Cash Reader Bill Identifier and what it does is that it allows users to identify a wide variety of bills not only from Colombia, but also from other countries.

It is available for iOS and Android, and what you must do, once you have the application installed, is use your cell phone camera to scan the bill, so in a matter of seconds, the application will issue its verdict.

In addition, this platform is useful for those with visual disabilities, because it has a functionality to speak the denomination of the bill out loud.

Another application that can get you out of trouble and performs similar functions is Counterfeit, which, like Cash Reader Bill Identifier, uses the device’s camera to scan the bills, but unlike the previous one, this one is paid.

The MCT Money Reader app also detects counterfeit bills and provides a guide to recognize money manually.

For its part, the Bank of the Republic on its website shared five keys to verify the authenticity of the banknotes:

1- Look: look at the images and colors of the bill.

2- Touch: perceive the high relief in some images and texts by touch.

3- Lift: hold the bill up to the light and discover images.

4- Spin: Observe color changing and movement effects when rotating the 5- bill.

5- Check: observe the fluorescence using ultraviolet light lamps and verify the micro texts using a magnifying glass.

The banknotes share the same security technology that is supported by several easy-to-verify elements; some of them are security tape, watermark, matching images and image with color change and motion effect.

For example, the $100,000 bill, which has been in circulation since March 31, 2016, has characteristics that allow its verification such as its dimensions: 66 mm X 153 mm, green as the predominant color, the image of President Carlos Lleras Restrepo next to the burrowing bird and the sevencueros flower on the obverse. The reverse highlights the Cocora Valley in Quindío and the wax palm, our national tree.
