The price of the Deutschlandticket will rise next year. This is due to the high losses suffered by transport companies.
The Deutschlandticket will cost 58 euros per month from next year. The transport ministers of the states agreed on an increase of 9 euros from 2025, as NRW department head Oliver Krischer told the German Press Agency.
“The agreement at the special conference of transport ministers shows that the states are sticking with the successful Deutschlandticket model and want to develop it further,” said the Green politician and current chairman of the conference of transport ministers. “With this price, we are managing to keep the ticket attractive and put the financing on a more solid footing.”
The dispute over the financing of the Deutschlandticket is as old as the subscription itself. The transport companies are suffering high revenue losses due to the cheaper offer. The federal and state governments had originally agreed to each compensate for this by half. The regionalization funds with which the federal government supports the states in providing public transport were increased for this purpose.
For the transport ministers, the price decision was a balancing act: According to a survey, the current price of 49 euros per month is already the financial pain threshold for many subscribers and interested parties.
30 percent of those who have at least temporarily subscribed to a Deutschlandticket or are interested in it in principle would cancel the subscription or no longer buy a ticket if the price increased. This is the result of a YouGov survey commissioned by the German Press Agency.
Consumer advocates have also warned in advance of a price increase for the Deutschlandticket. “If the transport ministers decide today that the Deutschlandticket will become more expensive, passengers will turn their backs on buses and trains,” said the chairwoman of the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv), Ramona Pop, on Monday. “The Deutschlandticket is a highlight of the traffic light government that is meeting with a lot of approval. It must remain affordable for everyone.”
