The Isaac robot is capable of preparing a Negroni, an Americano, a Gin Tonic or a Pink Gin in less than 60 seconds. This autonomous machine, which became the first bartender robot in Colombia, was created by the company Asimov Robotics for the bar of the restaurant Mítico: Culto a la Cocina in Envigado.

Isaac’s development and training process was over the last seven months. His first challenges were to serve shots and beers, but now he is a model who is also capable of preparing these four types of premium cocktails, just like a human does.

About the specifications of this robot: it weighs 10 kilograms and the entire cell has a weight of 75 kilograms; The operating time is up to six continuous hours and it has six position and force sensors inside the arm, plus another four located at the base of the structure.

Isaac has six axles. That is, six points of rotation, as if they were the joints of a person’s arm. Each point has an accelerometer and a proximity sensor, and from a tablet what the engineers do is program each of these movements, according to the need. They tell you the positions and speeds to complete the task. This process is known as graphical or block programming.

Sebastián Contreras is the general manager and co-founder of the Antioquia company Asimov Robotics, and explained that since last May they began planning the project with which they managed to integrate several technologies into one of the most important productive sectors of the city, such as restaurants and the bars.

“The idea is not to replace the work of a bartender, what we are looking for is for it to be a support for the work team, for them to interact when making preparations. It should not just be an attraction for visitors to the restaurant, but rather it should be an aid to improve efficiency in the processes, it should be a collaborative and fully functional robotic arm,” said Contreras.

In order for it to perform the movements and be able to make the preparations, the robot was subjected to different stages of programming and study. In other words, what the creators did was translate the way a cocktail is produced into engineering. In this process they taught him the movements to, for example, pick up the jigger, the utensil to measure the doses of the drinks, or the proper way to use the mixing spoon.

Isabela Ramírez, co-founder of the restaurant, explained that Isaac became part of the experience of the place that opened its doors less than two months ago and offers a tasting menu that is made in six moments.

Precisely, one of the six times is where people can interact with Isaac. The customer approaches and chooses one of the four drinks that he wants this robotic arm to prepare for him: to live the live experience. “It’s an extra arm that we have, because the bartender is the one who finally finishes the preparation, he is the one who decorates it,” said Ramírez.

Juan Pablo Valenzuela, president of Asobares Antioquia chapter, pointed out that with the arrival of Isaac to this establishment a milestone was marked in the country. “Innovation and technology were put at the service of entertainment and gastronomy to be increasingly competitive and reach international standards.”

According to Asimov Robotics, the next step is to scale the prototype, which in the future has more capabilities to prepare other types of drinks such as sodas, and also decorate the glasses and cups, that touch of fine coquetry that for now continues to be a task. of human bartenders.
