When setting up a network, it is important to understand the purpose of each component. It’s that easy to create a network using a router.
If you want to connect your own private network to the Internet, you need a suitable router. Most modern routers have multiple LAN ports as well as a WLAN function to connect devices wirelessly to the network.
Make sure that all your devices find a suitable connection to the router. The router acts as a so-called network hub or switch, i.e. as a central unit in the network.
It is also possible to use a router with just one LAN port and set up your own home network using separate switches, which are then connected to the router via cable.
The router distributes the IP addresses to the devices on the network
The router itself must be able to handle the connection type of your Internet provider, i.e. have at least one built-in DHCP server. This function distributes IP addresses to the individual components in your network, thereby supplying all devices with the Internet connection connected to the router.
Depending on whether your Internet provider provides you with a modem, you will either only need a classic router or a router with an integrated DSL or cable modem.
Obtain IP addresses automatically
All devices involved in your home network should obtain their IP addresses automatically. This is the default setting on most computers and other devices. Only then can the DHCP server in the router actually distribute the IP addresses to the individual devices.
The configuration of the network now takes place in two stages: First, you establish a connection to the Internet with your router. If you are using a separate modem, make sure it is working properly and then connect it to the WiFi port (if available) on your router using a LAN cable.
Enter your internet provider’s access data
The router uses the signal on this port to access the Internet. If the modem is integrated into your router, open the router configuration via the device’s user interface and enter your provider’s access data there to connect the router to the Internet.
As soon as this connection is established, activate the DHCP server in the router (if it is not activated automatically). Now an IP address is distributed to all connected devices and they can access the Internet without further configuration.
How to secure your network
If you use WiFi for your home network, you should definitely set a password for your WiFi so that it cannot be used by unauthorized persons. You should also change the password for the router’s configuration interface. Other network technologies can further increase security.
This includes a MAC address filter that only allows devices into your network whose MAC address you have previously entered in the router. These security measures are not absolutely necessary for wired networks, but some can still be used.
