In recent weeks, the device has been made available to the public in Colombia. HoloLens 2, Microsoft’s holographic glasses that facilitate mixed reality scenarios for immersive environments in different fields: education, health, manufacturing, architecture and entertainment.

Comes with sistema operativo Windows 10 Holographic, which allows to have a holographic computer in the head. Through applications you can access different solutions such as remote assistance and training, or that it is a tool for health and education issues. Are more than 1,000 scenarios that are enabled in this mixed reality ecosystem: they are downloaded from the Microsoft Store, some are paid, others are free.

In practice: medical students have the chance to explore human anatomy through the different body systems made with digital twins. In health, they can advance training: doctors are taught how to identify patient diseases (it was used in the pandemic in the United States).

One more case. In engineering and construction it is used to scale the works. The professional can see how the building would look to make future decisions, such as where the gas or water lines would pass. This process avoids building and then deconstructing.

A step beyond 2D experiences was taken, because in this case what is lived is in third dimension (3D). Iván Gabriel Gómez is a senior technical specialist at Microsoft Colombia and explained that with this advance “there is a paradigm shift” in man-machine interaction.

“These are the first steps of what is called ubiquitous computing,” said Gómez. Images that are projected to the eyes, screens that do the stereoscopic part of 3D. In other words: in 2D you touch a screen, here you have to go to the objects or use movement or voice commands.

When the person moves, it is not a static image, but changes as if it were a 3D object in the real world. It is as if you were interacting with real elements: you can pick up the objects. For example: you have a table in front of you and you can walk around it, see it from all angles, zoom in or out, explore with it. Touch it, even though it seems like it’s touching the air. This is the hologram that is seen with the glasses.

“Using your hands to interact with the device and the holograms allows, compared to other devices such as cell phones, to have your hands 100% free.” And it is that HoloLens 2 work with gestures: If you look at the palm of the hand, the sensors recognize this part of the body and immediately activate a hologram on the wrist that is the Windows start icon, similar to what happens on the computer. Tapping (or pinching) opens the interface with the application icons. With the voice you can also ask him to open an app.

About hardware, It has five cameras on the front: a main 8MP full HD camera and four smaller ones on the sides.. The on/off button is located on the back. It also brings a USB-C fast charging port, WiFi and Bluetooth connection. It also works without internet. Battery life: between two and three hours of active use.

As for the previous version, it has improvements in cameras, sensors and screens. Also in relation to computing: it is divided into the front and back, which better distributes the weight and means that the user does not get so tired when using them and they can be used using other elements such as industrial safety helmets.

Unlike virtual reality glasses, HoloLens 2 emphasize the concept of mixed reality: Holograms of the digital world are superimposed on top of the real world, the real world is not hidden as it is with VR headsets. The interaction model is also different, because pTo use these glasses, no controls are needed, just movements and the voiceIt also does not require cables, telephones or connection to a computer. The experience resembles what is seen in futuristic movies.
