Everything is becoming more expensive: This is how inflation arises – and what can be good about it. (Quelle: t-online)

The inflation rate remained constant in April. But a product still drives up costs at the supermarket checkout.

After a decline in March, the inflation rate is expected to remain at 2.2 percent. In April 2023 it was still 7.2 percent.

But how does the constant inflation rate affect the prices of everyday products? t-online looks at the supermarket shelves for you. To do this, our editorial team regularly notes the prices for selected products in the Rewe online shop and in branches of the supermarket chain.

In fact, the constant inflation rate is also noticeable at the supermarket checkout. Compared to our survey at the beginning of April, prices have increased slightly.

Toilet paper and apples are becoming cheaper

The biggest price drivers are potatoes, for which we can observe a price increase of more than 35 percent, iceberg lettuce (+27.52 percent) and butter (+13.38 percent). The price of rice also rose slightly by 5.59 percent compared to the survey from the beginning of April.

However, we can only see price declines for apples (-5.42 percent) and for toilet paper, where we can record a price decline of minus 15.83 percent.

If you only compare the products that were available both in our survey at the beginning of April and now, and take out the supply effects, the customer pays 67.70 euros at the supermarket checkout. In the previous survey it was only 66.70 euros. This results in a price increase of 1.5 percent.

For the survey: Since the supermarket regularly changes its range, makes special offers or certain products are temporarily unavailable, not all items can be compared every time the t-online shopping cart is surveyed. This was taken into account in the total shopping cart with a corresponding adjustment. How much more expensive life actually becomes ultimately depends largely on your own consumption habits.
