The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) presented a report on the progress in the incorporation of tools such as telemedicine for direct or indirect interaction with other specialists. The objective is to have a second opinion on the care of pediatric cancer patients, have remote assistance, follow-up teleconsultations, diagnosis and cutting-edge treatment, authorities of the institution informed mothers and fathers of minors under medical treatment.

During the 121st meeting of the group for the care of children and adolescents with cancer treated at the IMSS, Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, head of the Oncology Care Coordination, reported that to date 115 telemedicine sessions have been carried out with experts in the country. Of these, 99 were for the follow-up of clinical cases, where 35 Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplants (HSCT) were derived; and 20 training meetings on palliative care, Golden Hour, Early Warning Assessment Scale (EVAT), among others.

He also specified that more complex clinical cases have been discussed jointly where the best diagnostic and treatment alternatives have been proposed with the opinion of 35 experts. In addition, patients have been channeled in a timely manner to the services that are required with the support of all the units, which has led to an improvement in the referral of patients to specialized centers.

As for the training sessions, the IMSS Cancer Care Coordinator specified that treatments have been approved, improvements in comprehensive care for the management of complications associated with cancer treatment, use and application of new drugs, and academic sessions have been shared. with topics relevant to cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment.

He pointed out that the telemedicine at the IMSS includes electronic communication between professionals to carry out coordinated actions for patient administrative management services, distance training for professionals, and evaluation and collaborative research on the network.

Training of medical personnel

López Aguilar stressed that the future of the Institute in this area is focused on the continuous training of medical and nursing staff in all IMSS medical units that provide treatment to children with cancer, and holding collegiate and consensual sessions to define specific highly complex treatments.

He added that cutting-edge scientific innovations that occur in the world every day in the treatment of pediatric cancer patientsand share the scientific findings that will be taking place in the translational research that has already begun at Social Security and that will lead to precision medicine.

The coordinator of Oncological Care of the IMSS indicated that telemedicine in the State Reference Centers for the Care of Boys and Girls with Cancer (ONCOCREAN) It was born from the need to break distances and bring highly specialized medicine to all states.

On the other hand, the head of the Division of Digital Services and Information for Digital Health Care, Isaac Mejía Montes de Oca, reported that in the last two weeks 85 beneficiaries were incorporated into the cancer treatment registration platform. With this, there are 13 thousand 145 patients, of which 40 percent are pediatric and 60 adults, who are treated in 66 hospitals, 15 High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) and 51 Second Level.
