This is not a hoax: this is Russia’s new role in the UN Security Council

by time news

Although it has been waging a bloody war on Ukrainian soil for over a year, Russia last night became the acting president of the UN Security Council. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kolba, received this news with scorn and derision, saying that “this is the worst April Fool’s prank in history.” As I recall, Russia was also the acting president in February 2022, the month in which the war broke out.

Kolba added that “the country that regularly violates all the basic rules of international security, stands at the head of the body whose sole role is to protect international security.” In its new role, Russia can take advantage of its position to portray the Western countries as making false claims against it. What adds to the discomfort about Russia’s role is the fact that last month an indictment was issued against the Russian president, Vladimir Putinan arrest warrant, making Russia the first country in history, a member of the UN Security Council, to have an arrest warrant issued against its head.

Over the past year, Ukraine has consistently campaigned against Russia’s seat on the Security Council, pointing out in public hearings that Moscow accepted its seat under the Soviet Union in the early 1990s without a vote. However, the UN Charter makes it difficult to cancel the membership of a permanent country in the Council. This, when there is a Russian veto on the table.

In the meantime, the spokesperson of the American delegation to the UN spoke to the CNN network, saying that “a country that blatantly violates the UN Charter and invades its small neighbor has no place in the UN Council. Unfortunately, Russia is a permanent member of the Council, so there is no legal route that can change this reality.”
