Last Friday night it was announced that death of the jurist and Professor at UNAM Raul Carranca y Rivas at 93 years of age.

His life was dedicated to study of law and teaching of the same; he contributed his knowledge in Criminal Law for the professional training of many new lawyers in the law School of the highest house of studies and contributed ideas and projects for the development of law in Mexico.

Here we will tell you a little more about Raúl Camilo José Carrancá y Rivas.

Biography y career path

Carrancá and Rivas was born in Mexico City in 1930as the son of a family of lawyers.

  • He concluded his professional studies in Law in 1957at the Faculty of Law of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
  • On April 17th 1974 With the thesis “Prison and punishments in Mexico, outline of a penitentiary law” he was awarded the Doctorate degreeconferring upon him the distinction Magna Cum Laude and a Medal of Academic Merit.
  • Was member of the Mexican Academy of Criminal Sciences.
  • He served as a professor at UNAM for 65 years. at the Faculty of Law.
  • Was full professor full-time, with the highest category, at the Bachelor’s and Postgraduate level in the areas of Criminal and Constitutional Law.
  • Was Director and founder of the Postgraduate Program in Law at the Autonomous University of Morelos.

Outside of teaching

He wrote numerous books and articles such as “Criminal Law” and “General Theory of Crime” used to date as study material in universities.

In the public life of the country he participated in the creation of legal reforms and shared his legal experience in forums and commissions.

He was one of the first to promote the Penitentiary Theatrean initiative that sought to introduce cultural activities in prisons, considering it positive for the reintegration of prisoners into society.

His public offices

On July 16, 1950 he was appointed Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office agent.

From 1987 to 1990 he was designated Magistrate of the First Federal Electoral Court.
