Today is the International Day to Fight Breast Cancer. There are 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer in the world, representing 11.7% of all cancers. In women it ranks fifth in deaths and in Mexico, in 2020, it was the most common disease (15.3%) and the first cause of death in women.

In Mexico, there are an estimated 29,929 new cases and 7,931 deaths, with an incidence rate of 40.5% and a mortality rate of 10.6 per 100,000.

The highest mortality rates are in Nuevo León, Quintana Roo and Tamaulipas

For its part, in the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), 4,780 new cases and 2,225 deaths were detected in 2021, with an incidence rate of 25.14 per 100,000 and a mortality rate of 11.70 per 100,000. every 100 thousand.

Regarding the different states, the highest mortality rates are found in Nuevo León (15.55); Quintana Roo (15.53), Tamaulipas (15.41) and Durango (15.19). That is why establishing breast cancer prevention programs remains a challenge.

Breast cancer is the first cause of attention in Mexico

The PrevenIMSS strategy seeks the prevention, detection and control of diseases and reproductive health, including the timely detection of breast cancer through monthly self-examination starting at age 20; clinical examination starting at age 25 and mammography every two years starting at age 40.

In the country, breast cancer is the first cause of attention with nearly 2,200 cases seen in 2021 through the High Specialty Medical Unit Oncology Hospital of the Siglo XXI National Medical Center. This center has the technological, diagnostic and therapeutic capacity for all types of cancer and receives patients from the center of the country. In addition, this center has participated in the Clinical Practice Guides, Official Mexican Standards and in the proposal of a National Development Plan for the care of cancer patients that is being promoted in the Senate of the Republic.
