Kabul: The Taliban carried out the first public execution after coming back to power in Afghanistan. A young man named Tajmir was hanged for murder. The charge against Tajmir is that he stabbed another person to death five years ago. The execution was carried out at a sports stadium in Farah province. The Taliban spokesman said that the death sentence was carried out after the high courts upheld the sentence.

The victim’s mother stated that she opposed the Taliban’s demand for pardoning the accused. Last month, the Taliban had instructed the courts to include the death penalty in the Penal Code. When the Taliban came back to power, it was stated that there would be a relaxation of the harsh punishments that were previously in place. With the implementation of the public death penalty, there is a strong fear that the Taliban will implement harsher laws again.
