Scandinavia does well: almost all problems can be solved both in the bar and in the royal house, and someone always serves fish. But Germany gets something out of it, namely the Nordic embassies in Berlin, a diplomatic quintet unique in the world: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in a single building complex. A large contingent of Nordic monarchs and heads of state arrived in his honor on Monday. It was time to celebrate the ensemble’s 25th birthday. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also came. Skål, one can only say with envy.

But wait, jealousy is too early! As is known, the little man’s celebratory event is lunch, and the canteen of Fellehus, the Nordic community centre, is open to everyone on weekdays starting from 1pm; Before that, the embassy staff remains among themselves. Ambassadors themselves sometimes dine here, and Nordic ministers and even royals also come for lunch. It goes without saying that there is always a fish dish on the menu.

“Why does it always taste better where you don’t work?”

For example, herring with pickled pumpkin and potatoes. Nordic fin is considered a superfood from the sea, and that’s how it tastes, so good; However, the squash is unusually firm, almost as crunchy as raw kohlrabi.

German guests may start to wonder: is it Icelandic or more Norwegian? You sit on the third floor in front of the large windows, so that the dwindling daylight can be used to the full – on beautiful autumn days even at the tables on the balcony. Price: less than ten euros for a dish plus a drink. In the fridge there is also non-alcoholic beer, Meckatzer Weiß-Gold, which according to the manufacturer is the “Allgäuer Sonntagsbier”. So you can see: in the North every day is Sunday, purely in terms of mentality.

Fika: coffee break with cardamom knotsFriederike Haupt

That’s why dessert is also included. On the lower floor there is the “Victoria Kaffebar”, where you can find everything you need for a Nordic fika, a coffee break with friends. Cardamom yeast knots, cinnamon rolls, strong coffee and more guests discussing the virtues of Nordic embassies. Two women on a pilgrimage from the Bundestag philosophize about the attraction of the foreigner taking the example of the capital’s canteens: “Why is it always better where you don’t work?”

In this case this is only partly explained by the variety: the cardamom knot triumphs over the Bundestag pastries, at least in the eyes of those who call themselves Cardamom Ultras. Does Danish or Swedish blow from the next table? Anyway, laugh, joke. A blonde opens her laptop. Get to work!
