MOSCOW – Capital Syria Asma Assad visited Moscow, Russia, this week as her eldest son, Hafez, graduated from Moscow State University (MSU). Hafez received a master’s diploma with honors at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, with Asma attending the ceremony.

During her visit, the Syrian first lady appeared on RT Arabic’s Newsmaker program, speaking about issues of cultural exchange, the close ties between Syria and Russia, and the challenges facing both countries.

Asma said the two countries had faced similar problems for decades, both being subject to increased foreign pressure, as well as attempts to open economic blockades and attempts to establish control over them.

“However, the universal and large-scale challenge to the whole world is the threat of Neoliberalism, which is imposed on everyone. The main purpose of this is of course to obscure not only national identity, but identity that is very humane, as well as all its constituent elements, such as patriotism, traditions and customs,” said Asma as quoted from Russia TodaySunday (2/7/2023).

Traditional values, said the Syrian first lady, furthermore, are preserved in the family, which should be pillars for dialogue between youths around the world.

“That is especially true for our Eastern societies, because it is those societies that are directly threatened and, at the same time, are best able to resist this attack because of their culture, morality and values,” he added.

The Syrian first lady was also asked about the latest developments in Russia, namely the recent short-lived uprising by Wagner Group PMCs, which occurred shortly before her visit. However, Asma said the uprising had not affected her determination to visit Russia at all.

“Russian friends support us unquestioningly during the ongoing war in our country. Therefore, we also unhesitatingly support and will continue to support the struggle of our friends,” he stressed.
