Those who have returned excitedly from the holidays are advised to be careful, as there are several mediocre rock records of the new crop, which make it difficult to adapt to everyday life. From Big Thief’s Buck Mick to The Armed and Alice Cooper’s old caravan, mediocrity is clouding the landscape. Things are somewhat better on Margaret Glaspie’s record. The American songwriter returned a few days ago with the Echo the Diamond, a simple and unnecessary indie rock album, in which she leaves aside the complex orchestrations and synthesizers that characterized her material until yesterday, to keep only the essentials: electric guitar, bass, drums. Its opening riff Act Natural whets the appetite and Get back what follows is also well done. As we read, the record was recorded over three days. In some cases, we hear the first take. In some others, we listen to the rehearsal! Although there is a distinct lack of originality in Glaspie’s voice and writing, her talent is felt, especially on the acoustic Memories, which comes about halfway through and steals the show. Granted, the performance is reminiscent of Big Thief’s Adrian Lenker, as Pitchfork’s editor notes, but the song does its job, and that’s what counts. As a songwriter of small stature, Margaret Glaspie has not raised anyone’s expectations, to say the least, she disappoints. And even though he lives in Brooklyn, as I hear it MemoriesI feel like she’s singing from another floor of my apartment building.
