A region can become a real gold resource again in a few years, as the products are very similar.

Are we headed for a new gold rush in France in 2024?! The race to acquire the most precious metal has resumed in France. A site with “potential deposit” will be exploited in the coming years to try to extract kilos of gold nuggets. The state has given it the green light. The purpose: “to contribute greatly to the freedom of supply of France and Europe in precious metals and processes.”

While Côtes d’Armor, Gard and the Pyrenees are the main gold mining regions still known in France, so the new one should see the light of day. This is in the west of the country, in the center of Limousin. In the area between Limoges, Brive, Périgueux and Angoulême, a search area has been determined. It includes the districts of Chalard, Ladignac-le-Long (Haute-Vienne) and Jumilhac-le-Grand (Dordogne).

This site is not selected at random. This is a former mining operation, called “Bourneix”, closed in 2002 and which has been the site of frequent gold discoveries over the centuries. Today, “many tons of gold” are still there. The village of Chalard is also on the edge of “one of the largest French gold regions, with grades above the international average”, Thomas Poitrenaud, geologist and president of the Arédiennes mines, pointed out. Figaro in 2023. And this, when a kilo of gold sells for around €60,000.

On these 39km², of course there will be gold, but not only that. The discovery of silver, tin, copper, zinc, lead or even nickel is also hoped for. But don’t think you can find it yourself with your hat and sieve. Extraction is managed and stored for the company Aurelius Resources, a subsidiary of an English company of the same name, which specializes in mining. Now, the company will explore the soil for at least five years, a period which will determine if a project can be organized to extract the metals. The company is very hopeful to set up a mine.

Some voices are trying to be raised to oppose the project, especially in the face of the danger of pollution that it may cause. Inside mail, the Stop Mines 87 group is concerned that “exploited sites are indiscriminate pollution”, remembering that “pollution is not or only the care of the operators.” It also warns of the “quantity” of water needed on such a project. Study the effect the site operator was aware of the pollution but confirmed that the effects would be “temporary”.
