This is the second Rolls-Royce Droptail, possibly the most expensive new car in the world. The first, La Rose Noire, was unveiled at the ultra-exclusive Monterey Car Week a week ago. Only four will be produced in total and, although the final price is not known, it is estimated to be around 30 million euros.

The Droptails are the pinnacle of luxury for the already luxurious brand. Only very special customers are able to order a custom, hand-built car from the Woodwood factory. This one, named Amethyst, comes from a family that made its fortune in jewelry before making the leap to other businesses.

The Amethyst “celebrates the family’s personally selected materials.” The first of these was a sample of Calamander wood, a species of ebony native to the Indian east coast. This made it take Rolls-Royce six months to find the right wood sample, reviewing more than 100 logs.

Once found, the manufacturer has built “the widest wooden surface in its history”, which extends to the rear, which has an active aerodynamic system. Of course, each vein is perfectly matched to its opposite.

Like La Rose Noire, the Amethyst can be equipped with or without a solid roof, allowing it to be a long coupé with a lithe silhouette for its dimensions, with photochromic glass that can be rendered opaque or nearly translucent.

The two-tone exterior paint is inspired by a desert flower, the round amaranth, as well as the amethyst, a stone that the jeweler has associated with the birth of his son. This flower is born white and transforms to an intense purple, which contrasts with the color of the gem and has fragments of aluminum to make it shiny.

Similar to La Rose Noire, the Amethyst comes with a watch from one of the ‘holy trinity of Swiss watchmaking’, only in this case, rather than Audemars Piguet, it’s Vacheron Constantin.

Specifically, it is a unique watch, called Les Cabinotiers Armillary Tourbillon, in which the winding movement has a coaxial tourbillon that denotes the attention to detail of both houses. The clock can be housed in a specific space for it on the dashboard, but it can also be removed for use.

With regard to mechanics, the Amethyst uses – as all Droptails will predictably do – the jewel in the Rolls-Royce crown: the huge 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 with 593 horsepower, 30 more than the Phantom.

According to the director of individualized Design of the brand, Alex Innes, “The Amethyst Droptail is the epitome of subtle artistry and depth of detail. Coupled with a sensitive client passionate about modern design, as well as his connection to gemstones, this is an impressive projection of his personal story.”
