From model to Bond girl to rock star wife: Barbara Bach has had a career that many dream of. The actress, who celebrates her 77th birthday on August 27th, started modeling at the age of 16 and then enchanted the film world as Bond girl Major Anya Amasova in the tenth 007 film “The Spy Who Loved Me”. She enchanted audiences in 1977 alongside 007 charmer Roger Moore and film villain Curd Jürgens.
A year later, the American impressed the film world with an unvarnished gala performance in the war film “The Wild Bunch of Navarone”. After the authentic filming with Franco Nero, Harrison Ford, Carl Weathers and Robert Shaw, Barbara Bach was at the top of the list of replacement candidates for “Charlie’s Angels” dropout Kate Jackson. In the end, however, those responsible for the successful TV series decided on Shelley Hack. A decision that heralded the gradual end of Barbara Bach’s career in the cinema.
Barbara Bach’s last significant appearance on the big screen was in the Stone Age comedy “Caveman” – a film that largely flew under the mainstream radar, but brought the American great happiness in love. None other than lead actor and ex-Beatle Ringo Starr turned the actress’ head during filming.
“We fell in love at the end of filming and then took our feelings for each other into everyday life. When Ringo invited me to Monte Carlo shortly afterwards, I didn’t hesitate for a second. It just felt right and normal,” Barbara Bach is quoted as saying on her homepage.
The two married in April 1981. From then on, acting played only a minor role in Barbara Bach’s life. In 1987, she finally ended her acting career and devoted herself to social and charitable projects.
Barbara Bach was by Ringo Starr’s side through thick and thin. “I didn’t tour much in the 70s and 80s. At that time I was often in contact with substances that weren’t good for me,” Ringo Starr once revealed to the US magazine “People”.
His wife also struggled with addiction. At times, Barbara Bach could not live without alcohol. In 1988, the couple decided to go to rehab together – and it was a success. After that, they became involved in many anti-drug projects and organized charity events for disadvantaged people.
Today, the celebrity couple lives in Los Angeles – but rather away from the hustle and bustle of celebrity life. If anything, husband Ringo occasionally causes a stir in the industry – most recently in 2022 with the EP release “EP3”.
When asked about the recipe for success of her marriage, the mother of two – daughter Francesca and son Gian Andrea are from her marriage to the Italian Augusto Gregorini, which ended in divorce in 1978 – revealed to “People” magazine: “I just love this man. It’s as simple as that.”
