In his report of the Weather in Guatemala on the weekend of July 5-7, 2024Insivumeh has predicted that throughout the national territory there will be cloudy weather with drizzle and rain accompanied by electrical activity, mainly in the afternoon and at night. These conditions will be present due to the entry of humidity from both coasts and a low pressure system in the Pacific. Specifically, on Friday afternoon and night there could be an increase in clouds nationwide.

Regions most affected by the rains

The regions that could experience the highest accumulated precipitation are the West, the Northern Transversal Strip, Bocacosta, the Central Altiplano and the Eastern Valleys. Due to the rains in the country, it is recommended to be cautious due to the sudden rise of rivers, mainly in El Progreso, Zacapa, Chiquimula, Huehuetenango, Quiché, Petén and Alta Verapaz.

It is also important that Huehuetenango, Quiché, San Marcos, Quetzaltenango, Totonicapán, Chimaltenango, Sololá, Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz and Guatemala be alert to mass movements, such as landslides, avalanches, slides or mudflows. In Izabal, an increase in the height of the waves and wind is expected for Friday the 5th, so it is recommended to be careful when fishing or sailing in the area of ​​El Quetzalito and nearby communities.

Beryl’s career

Insivumeh has indicated that Beryl does not pose a direct threat to the country. However, due to its proximity, abundant moisture will enter the country.

In addition to this, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center ―NOAA― indicates that at 12:00 on Friday, July 5, Beryl had weakened to tropical storm. It is currently still affecting part of the northern Yucatan Peninsula. It is moving west-northwest and is expected to continue northwestward in the next few hours or the next day. The forecast predicts that it will emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico during Friday night and then move northwestward toward northeastern Mexico and southern Texas by the end of the weekend.

As it weakened, its maximum winds have also decreased to near 115 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts. Although it is expected to weaken on Friday as it crosses the Yucatan Peninsula, it could strengthen as it moves over the Gulf of Mexico.

Sahara dust cloud in Guatemala
