1. 🌳 You must go to Byeolseo on a windy day
In Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do, there is Soswaewon, a byeolseo garden representing the Joseon Dynasty. Soswaewon is a Korean byeolseo garden created by Yang San-bo (1503-1557), a civil servant of the Joseon Dynasty, after witnessing the downfall of his teacher Jo Gwang-jo at the age of seventeen. Byeolseo (別墅) means a separate residence created away from the house, and Byeolseo Garden means a garden created away from the house. We accompanied artist Hwang Ji-hae, who won the gold medal at last year’s world-renowned garden fair, the Chelsea Flower Show in England, for turning a herb colony in Jiri Mountain into a garden.

The world is confused. It is said that a garden is silence amidst noise. A refreshing breeze blew as I passed through the bamboo forest at the entrance to Soswaewon in Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do. However, the shock that this unexpected action gave to the people was great. Just because I entered Soswaewon, a byeolseong garden representing the Joseon Dynasty, my anxiety did not disappear for a moment.

“How about taking a walk through Soswaewon with artist Hwang Ji-hae and listening to her talk about the garden?” The visit to Soswaewon on the 7th originated from a suggestion from the Korea Arboretum Garden Management Center, which recently helped create a Korean garden at the Korean Cultural Center in New York, USA. Artist Hwang Ji-hae (48), who won the gold medal at last year’s world-renowned garden fair, the Chelsea Flower Show in England, for creating a garden from a herb colony in Jiri Mountain, presented a garden that recreated Soswaewon Aeyangdan (愛陽壇) at the Korean Cultural Center in New York in October of this year. At the age of fifteen, he heard from his piano teacher that ‘Arnold Schoenberg was the most extreme avant-garde’ and immediately developed a strong curiosity about the composer Schoenberg. However, the year was 1947, and it was nearly impossible to hear his music in Korea. Nam June Paik, who obtained the pirated Schonberg album after searching for two to three years, said, “I will never forget the excitement I felt as if I had found a jewel in an Egyptian tomb.”

This experience completely changed his life. Nam June Paik went to Germany via Japan to study the ‘avant-garde’ Schoenberg, met the European avant-garde art group ‘Fluxus’, and remained active as a world-renowned artist in New York, USA. The ‘Nam June Paik, Nam June Paik, and Nam June Paik’ exhibition, which opened at the Busan Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art on the 30th of last month, showcases about 160 of his works and records.

Starting next week, the nights of Seoul will be brightly lit with videos containing messages of hope, such as ‘Bracchio’s New Beginning’.
