To emphasize that the monkeypox outbreak can be stopped, the World Health Organization (WHO) gave an example of a 35-year-old Turkish national who was discharged from a hospital in the United Kingdom after 11 days of treatment for monkeypox.
Harun Tulunay, who lives in north London, was struck with a fever reaching 40 degrees Celsius. Because his COVID-19 test was negative and a small wound appeared on his nose, he was hospitalized for monkey pox for 11 days.
Tulunay, a campaigner for the sexual health charity, said he couldn’t swallow his own spit and feared he would die.
“Doctors told me I had one of the most serious cases of monkey pox they had treated,” he told British media, adding: “I developed excruciating pain all over my body that felt like you were tearing flesh from your bones. ”
“I thought I was going to die.”
Tulunay, who was also diagnosed with HIV in 2016, is one of 2,137 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the UK since an unusual outbreak began in at least 50 countries in May.
“It is indeed currently circulating among men who have sex with men,” the scientists said.
Tulunay made a comparison between COVID-19 and monkey pox, saying, “It was worse than COVID, which I’ve had twice.”
After nearly two weeks of treatment, he was released from the hospital and became a good example for the medical community in the fight against monkey pox.
“We believe the monkey pox outbreak can be stopped,” the WHO said in a statement on July 26.
The United Nations has posted Tulunay’s photos of his recovery on its website.
Asked what he thinks about all this, the Turkish man said: “I want to share my story to educate people and normalize the conversation about monkey pox.”
The rash usually starts within one to three days of the appearance of the fever. The rash is usually more concentrated on the face and extremities than on the trunk. The face is affected in 95 percent of the cases.
