The Speaker of the 25th Knesset, Yariv Levin, proposed to Prime Minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu a plan that would result in the vacating of four seats in the Supreme Court as part of the campaign to change the face of the judicial system. The direct goal is to allow the right-wing government to appoint four judges to the Supreme Court immediately.

According to a report in News 13, Levin’s proposal is that the retirement age for judges, which is currently 70, will be reduced to 67. The change will be immediate, and will also apply to serving judges. Netanyahu, withdrawn from the offer.

The move suggested by Levin is not original. When Poland decided to change the face of the judicial system, the retirement age of judges was lowered – which caused the dismissal of dozens of judges.

If Levin’s initiative passes, the result is an “affair” of four judges who in practice will go home immediately. The judges who will be affected by Levin’s initiative are President Esther Hayut, Judge Uzi Fogelman, Judge Anat Baron and also Judge Yosef Elron.

With the exception of Elron, the judges who left the Supreme Court following Levin’s initiative are considered to be the more activist camp. Alron is considered a conservative, but even though he will leave the Supreme Court, the emerging right-wing government will gain three more conservative seats on the Supreme Court.

This report came after the member parties in the established coalition did not decide on the members of the committee for the selection of judges on behalf of the Knesset and the government, this is because Levin said that a decision on the matter may not be relevant due to the possible cancellation of the committee for the selection of judges.
