On March 21, 2022, the inauguration of the International Airport “Felipe Ángeles” (AIFA) and practically a year later it will have its first headquarters of the
Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris). According to what was announced, through two offices there will be specialized personnel from the Sanitary Authorization and Operation commissions, who will verify the products that enter Mexico through customs at this airport.

AIFA finally has Cofepris offices

The owner of Cofepris, Alejandro Svarch Perez, accompanied by the general director of AIFA, Isidoro Pastor Román, declared the operations of the regulatory authority inaugurated. This is to ensure greater traceability and better control of narcotics, psychotropics and chemical substances, through physical and documentary inspection of medicines and/or raw materials, thereby preventing health risks.

Alejandro Svarch thanked the head of AIFA and commented that it represents a milestone for this health agency to start operations in a modern customs office with valuable growth capacity.

“From the start of cargo operations, all products subject to health regulations, including medicines and vaccines, will be able to arrive through this airport, which offers cutting-edge infrastructure and technology, where Cofepris’ specialized personnel will be able to operate under the conditions of the most high world standard.

Isidoro Pastor highlighted the success of the operations at the cargo terminal that began on September 1, 2022 and recognized the importance of the role of Cofepris in handling international cargo.

Within the framework of the start of operations of the offices of the health agency, the Health Promotion Commission, headed by its head, Pablo Quiroga Adame, held a meeting with representatives of the regulated industries that are users of the Mexican Airport System. The objective was to attend to their comments and concerns and to take a tour of recognition of the new Cofepris facilities at AIFA.

First pharmaceutical company to operate in the AIFA

On the other hand, it is worth remembering that just a few weeks ago the German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim made history by being the first in its industry to start export operations from AIFA.

Everything was generated thanks to the displacement of more than 470 thousand units of medication from its Human Health and Animal Health units. In addition, it was also the first of all industries to carry out an import from this space.

First medicines sent and received from AIFA

The first 16,000 units of the finished product were shipped to China on March 9. While on the 11th of the same month a total of 456,750 pieces arrived in Mexico for the manufacture of its main oral antidiabetics. It is expected that the final destination will be the Mexican and United States markets.

Based on the above, it is expected that AIFA could also receive other types of drugs such as vaccines. Although during its first year the flow of arrivals has been minimal, activity is expected to increase exponentially during the following months.
