“This move is reminiscent of the crisis period”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has been arrested by the CBI for corruption in liquor robbery. The leaders of various political parties are protesting all over India against this. While West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav have written to Prime Minister Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin has also written a letter.

In my letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I hope you will agree that diversity of policies and diversity of political parties is the heartbeat of Indian democracy. Similarly, the rule of law and individual liberty are the foundations of our criminal justice system. That being the case, it is painful and disappointing that Manish Sisodia, who was elected by the people and was the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, was arrested on trumped-up charges and caused pain and stress to him in violation of the individual freedom guaranteed by the Constitution. All rules of criminal justice have been flouted and normal legal procedures have been flouted for the personal gratification of those in power in the middle.

In the last nine years, the independence of the intelligence agencies has been taken away wherever the central ruling party wants. Time and again these investigative bodies have been ruthlessly launched as a weapon of political vandalism only against the leaders of the opposition parties.

False accusations have become tools for abuse of power. Anarchies such as conducting raids on opposition leaders, overthrowing elected governments in flagrant violation of the anti-defection law, arrogantly deploying intelligence agencies to arrest opposition leaders and leaders who are troublesome to the BJP are not only abuses of government power, but also reminders of the crisis period.

I would like to remind that misuse of intelligence agencies and constitutional posts including Governorship will never help to strengthen India’s vibrant democracy. I would also like to inform you that the day when Manish Sisodia was arrested in violation of due process of law will be remembered as the black day of the central BJP government.

I request them to take all measures to save the dignity of the premier intelligence agencies of the country and especially the constitutional posts like the governor during the last nine years of central BJP rule. Also, in a letter to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has emphasized that he has requested the unconditional release of Manish Sisodia, who has been arrested for flouting the legal procedures and the basic principles of our 70-year-old constitution.
