Before meeting Devanshi and coming to India, Michael, a resident of Britain, was a teacher by profession and taught in a university. Apart from the UK, he lived in Spain, Italy, North Africa and the Middle East until 1985 and then settled in Japan.

There he met Devanshi, who came from Rukhla, a small village near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. Devanshi, who studied at a boarding school in Shimla and was a post graduate from Chandigarh, was also a teacher. From 1994 to 2006, she taught English Literature, Language and Social Science to children in a private school. After this, in the year 2007, she went to Japan to pursue her teaching career.

Speaking to The Better India, Devanshi says, “We met in Japan in 2009 and got married a year later. We used to work there and go to Britain and India to visit our families during holidays.”

Guests from all over the country and world come to Himalayan Orchard

Himalayan Orchard Farm Stay surrounded by natural beauty

Devanshi’s grandfather built this beautiful farm and traditional Himachali home in the Himalayan hills in the 1930s and named it Himalayan Orchard.

During her visit to India in 2012, Devanshi realized that her parents were unable to take care of the family orchard and farm due to various personal reasons. In such a situation, Devanshi decided to take the reins of Himalayan Orchard and to carry forward the culture and heritage of her ancestors, she left her job in 2016 and came to Shimla from Japan with Michael.

Today Michael and Devanshi together are welcoming the guests coming from all over the country and the world to this farm stay. There is a glimpse of Himachal’s culture in every corner of this farm stay.

The guests coming here can get a closer look at the culture of Himachal, apart from staying in natural and traditional hill houses made of stone and wood. While walking in the forest, one can pluck fruits and vegetables like apple, pear, mushroom, grapes with one’s hands and taste them.

Keeping the environment in mind, everything here is grown organically and chemical free and fresh food is served to the guests in the morning and evening. Everything from cheese to jam and chutney is made here by hand without any chemicals. Everything is made organically in the farm stay.

Here, the beautiful pond full of fish in front of the house, the beautiful natural views of the mountains and sunset from the balcony are captivating. This couple, passionate about nature, handcrafts, theatre, poetry and music, is introducing people to responsible tourism and sustainable living.

Devanshi says, “Apart from doing something for each other, doing something together with full dedication and passion is also love.”
