French Users Alarmed by Suspicious Bank Withdrawals

Many French people have noticed dramatic withdrawals from their bank accounts.
Karen, a concerned mother, expressed her distress on a consumer forum about a questionable withdrawal from her child’s bank account. She is not alone. Similar messages abound on various platforms. Often, the story is the same: internet users claim they have no knowledge of the sender and did not make the purchase mentioned in the title. The amounts charged usually range from 10 to 15 euros per month. But what is the cause for this worry?
In recent months, French users have been alerted to check for a direct debit associated with SFAM, which has been replaced by Air Média Lyon on bank statements. This unfamiliar name suggests a publishing house in the Rhône region. However, subscribers claim they do not subscribe to any local news publications. The source of this mystery payment remains unclear.
Air Média Lyon, it turns out, operates a platform called MYM, which allows users to upload and share photos and videos of themselves, encompassing various activities. Notably, the platform is known for featuring “clothing” content. Access to this platform comes at a cost, with subscription plans ranging from €4.99 to €49.99 per month. Users are essentially paying creators to view their uploaded content.
While legitimate, this payment system has raised concerns. The company has attempted to address this by altering the platform’s name. Despite the explanation, many users remain skeptical and bewildered by the sudden appearance of these charges on their bank statements.
Between 12 and 14 million users are registered on MYM.
