The current lifestyle has generated a drastic increase in obesity levels worldwide.
Although there is no cure for type 2 diabetes, some recent research confirms that its remission through diet is possible.
The most recent advances on the subject were presented at the 83rd Scientific Session of the American Diabetes Association.

The Type 2 diabetes maintains an upward trend throughout the world and one of its biggest problems is that it does not have a cure, although some recent research affirms that its remission is possible. In this sense, the keys to achieving a satisfactory result are a timely diagnosis and changing the eating plan.

To put in context, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that there are 422 million people with this condition. Especially sedentary lifestyle and obesity, both caused by the current lifestyle, are the main responsible for this situation that is increasingly alarming.

In Mexico, during the first quarter of 2023, 10,102 new cases of type 2 diabetes were registered, with the states of Tabasco, Jalisco and Puebla reporting the highest number1 . For this reason, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) recommends that people living with this condition eat a healthy diet that helps maintain an adequate level of blood sugar. Even if possible go to a nutrition expert to receive a personalized eating plan.

Is it possible to achieve diabetes remission?

First of all it is necessary to clarify one point because remit is not synonymous with cure. In this case, diabetes remission is a period of time in which blood sugar levels return to normal without the need for treatment. It does not mean that the patient has been cured, but it does mean that the discomfort has almost completely disappeared.

Recent research shows that remission from type 2 diabetes is possible for some people who choose to take certain control measures, such as following a low-calorie diet.

“We have seen encouraging results when people living with type 2 diabetes participate in a multifaceted weight management program. Following a low-calorie diet and restricted fasting for 16 hours helps people with type 2 diabetes lose weight, which can ultimately induce diabetes remission,” said Dr. Osama Hamdy, Medical Director of the Clinical Program. of Obesity and Diabetes inpatients at the Joslin Diabetes Center, during the Abbott symposium at the 83rd American Diabetes Association Scientific Session.

In addition, Dr. Hamdy presented the Diabetes Remission Outcomes Protocol (DROP)in which he used this nutritional intervention for 12 weeks, combining it with strength training and obtaining results in which, for more than five years, people with this condition were in remission.

In another study, after one year in which individuals followed a low-calorie diet as part of weight control measures, nearly half were in remission of type 2 diabetes. At two years, nearly one in every three remained in remission.

Due to these emerging data, medical societies such as Diabetes Canada recommend low-calorie diets using meal replacements, including diabetes-specific nutritional formulas as an option.

Personalized nutritional care for people with diabetes

While low-calorie diets may work for some people, other people living with diabetes may benefit from personalized medical nutrition therapy to manage their condition.

Local experts have started adapting the algorithms in many regions and countries around the world. A clinical trial in Malaysia studied the effect of tDNA implementation in the country and found that a lifestyle intervention program helped adults with type 2 diabetes to improve their diabetes management and body weight.

Nutritional tools, such as tDNA, and advanced research, as well as studies looking at the potential impact of weight-management programs that incorporate lifestyle modifications such as low-calorie/low-carbohydrate diets, can encourage healthcare professionals and people with type 2 diabetes to successfully manage the condition.
